The “ human ” statistics of terrestrial impact cratering rate ⋆

چکیده

The most significant periodicities in the terrestrial impact crater record are due to the “human–signal”: the bias of assigning integer values for the crater ages. This bias seems to have eluded the proponents and opponents of real periodicity in the occurrence of these events, as well as the theorists searching for an extraterrestrial explanation for such periodicity. The “human–signal” should be seriously considered by scientists in astronomy, geology and paleontologywhen searching for a connection between terrestrial major comet or asteroid impacts and mass extinctions of species.

Importance of Cratering Processes

The importance of impact processes on a planetary scale has been recognized only fairly recently, after it became evident that not only our Moon (FIG. 1), but all other bodies in the solar system with a solid surface are covered with meteorite impact craters (FIG. 2). Impact cratering is a highenergy event that occurs at more or less irregular intervals (although over long periods of time, an a...

Mars/moon Cratering Rate Ratio Estimates

This article presents a method to adapt the lunar production function, i.e. the frequency of impacts with a given size of a formed crater as discussed by Neukum et al. (2001), to Mars. This requires to study the nature of crater-forming projectiles, the impact rate difference, and the scaling laws for the impact crater formation. These old-standing questions are reviewed, and examples for the r...

Bayesian time series analysis of terrestrial impact cratering

Giant impacts by comets and asteroids have probably had an important influence on terrestrial biological evolution. We know of around 180 high velocity impact craters on the Earth with ages up to 2400 Myr and diameters up to 300 km. Some studies have identified a periodicity in their age distribution, with periods ranging from 13 to 50 Myr. It has further been claimed that such periods may be c...

The Comparison of Size-Frequency Distributions of Impact Craters and Asteroids and the Planetary Cratering Rate

The well-investigated size-frequency distributions (SFD) for lunar craters can be used to estimate the SFD for projectiles that formed craters both on terrestrial planets and on asteroids. Our results suggest these distributions may have been relative stable over the past 4 G.y. The derived projectile SFD is found to have a shape that is similar to the SFD of main-belt asteroids as compared wit...
